Mountain Cur

DESCRIPTION:

The Mountain Cur Dog is versatile breed with a rich history. It is believed that Mountain Curs are descendants of European Cur-type dogs which were brought to the U.S by immigrants. They were mostly used by pioneers to herd the cattle, hunt wild animals or even guard a property. Their first locations were mountains of Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. The Mountain Cur dog was the first true purebred from the United States of American purebred.

CHARACTERISTICS:

The Mountain Cur Dog is a muscular and stocky dog. He is extremely hardy and fearless. He is distinguished by large, expressive eyes and a strong neck. This dog breed has mid-sized half drooping ears. The legs are typically normal long. Mountain Cur dogs can be very good guards, without fear, ready to protect.

CHARACTER:

The Mountain Cur Dog is a beautiful hunting dog, which can be used for hunting both small and big game. The Mountain Cur Dog can serve as a watchdog, hunter and a herding dog. This breed is not suitable for families that already have other pets, Mountain Cur is not tolerant to other pets. Representatives of this breed are very suspicious of strangers and will jealously protect their families and property.

COAT / CARE:

The Mountain Cur Dog has a double coat. While the outer layer is decorated with short, smooth hair of rough texture, the undercoat is soft, thin and thick. This breed comes in blue, yellow, brown, or brindle. In order to remove the excess hair, it is recommended to periodically comb and brush the dog’s coat.

Mountain Cur Dogs should be bathed only in case of extreme necessity since this breed has a very sensitive skin. Therefore, make sure to use a mild shampoo.

HEALTH PROBLEMS:

The Mountain Cur is a generally healthy dog breed. These dogs do not show a genetic predisposition to specific health issues. Mountain Cur sees an average lifespan of between 12 and 16 years.

WEIGHT / HEIGHT

The Mountain Cur dog breed’s height is around 18 – 26 inches and weighs around 30 and 60 pounds. Female Mountain Cur dogs can reach a size from 17 to 25 inches and weighs between 30 and 60 pounds.

TRAINING:

The Mountain Cur Dog is a clever dog but can be quite naughty. He will take orders only from his owner. This is why this breed requires early socialization and obedience training. During training, the dog must be treated with love and respect. Hence, the teacher should be fair and patient, but strict.

ACTIVITY:

The Mountain Cur Dog is not suitable for keeping in urban areas because he needs a lot of physical effort. This breed needs to live in the countryside. This will ensure his proper evolution, as he will have plenty of room to walk without a leash and explore.

LIVING CONDITIONS:

The Mountain Cur Dog is not a type of a dog which should spend every day inside a house, they enjoy in an open space and that’s why their ideal living situation is in a rural setting. This type of breed needs an everyday exercise like a walk, jog or even some work. They are also really good for a hunting-loving person because that way the dog can utilize its natural talents and also burn some energy while working.

FEEDING:

Dry food is really good for Mountain Curs and it can be mixed with canned food or water. Also, the puppy should always get the best quality food, but limiting it is also important because it may cause some issues with tooth and bone which could result in extremely choosy eating habits or even obesity. You can also feed him fruits and vegetables, cooked eggs…

PUPPIES:

Mountain Cur’s litter size is between 3 and 9, but there is a possibility of up to 10 litters. One of the most important things for puppies is training and socialization which should start as early as possible. Also, if you want your puppy safe and to prevent it from having a bad habit of destroying things, you will need to keep an eye on him every moment.
