PEMBROKE WELSH CORGI

Description:

Pembroke Welsh Corgi is the smallest and the oldest herding dog, and one of two breeds known as a Welsh Corgi. He is a multi-purposed breed, originated in Pembrokeshire. The Pembroke is Queen Elizabeth`s favorite pooch. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was officially recognized by the American Kannel Club in 1934.

Characteristics:

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a low body and short legs, but he moves remarkably fast. He is athletic and full of energy. Pembroke Welsh Corgis are reliable and intelligent, they are eager to please and have a strong work ethic. This dog is often called “a big dog in a small dog’s skin.” Comparable Breed: Australian Cattle Dog and Cardigan Welsh Corgi.

Character:

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is obedient and deeply devoted to his master. He is sociable, friendly and loves to be in the limelight. This dog is very brave, though sometimes excessively aggressive. Pembroke Welsh Corgis got amazing confidence and excellent guard qualities. They are especially suitable for families with teenagers. The Pembroke Corgi does not tolerate loneliness, and if left alone for a long time, he gets bored and barks excessively. This breed is suspicious of strangers and very territorial. Because of their herding instinct, the Corgi will chase everything that moves.

Coat / Care:

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a double-layered coat. The outer layer is coarse and straight. The undercoat is thick and short. The hair on the neck, shoulders, chest and back is longer than on other parts of the body. The coat comes in a variety of colors, including sable, fawn, red and beige. Also, the Pembroke Corgi may or may not be marked with white spots. This breed sheds heavily twice a year. This breed needs minimal care- regular brushing will suffice. Bathe your dog only in case of urgent need.

Health Problems:

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is generally healthy dog, but like all breeds, they’re prone to Cataracts, Retinal Atrophy, Dysplasia, Epilepsy, and Spine Problems. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

Weight / Height

The male Pembroke Welsh Corgi dog breed’s height is around 10 – 12 inches and weighs around 24 and 30 pounds. Female Welsh Corgi dogs can reach a size from 10 – 12 inches and weighs between 24 and 28 pounds.

Training:

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is smart and willing to learn. Socialization and training must be conducted at the early age. Training must be consistent, strict but fair. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is able to master any skill, he can be used in therapy, and as the assistant dog for deaf people.

Activity:

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi enjoys walking and playing with his family. He always craves adventure but is able to live in a city apartment, provided that he exercises regularly. Cardigans will overeat if given a chance, so be sure to monitor their diet so they don’t become obese.
