POLISH TATRA SHEEPDOG BREED

Description:

The Polish Tatra Sheepdog is a working breed, bred in Poland around the 1600s. Like many other Polish breeds, Polish Tatra Sheepdogs were practically exterminated during the Second World War. Fortunately, a group of enthusiastic Polish breeders succeeded to restore this beautiful dog. This species is rarely found outside of Eastern Europe, and it’s still not recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Characteristics:

The Polish Tatra Sheepdog is an impressive and massive dog. His coat is resistant to harsh climates, which allows the dog to tolerate both extremely low and high temperatures. This dog is very intelligent, independent and proud. Furthermore, Polish Tatra Sheepdogs are very strong and strikingly looking.

Character:

The Polish Tatra Sheepdog is deeply devoted to his master. This dog loves being around people. He gets along well with children and can quickly find a common language with pets within the family. However, Polish Tatra Sheepdogs have strong prey drive, and they will try to herd anything that moves. This breed is very protective of his family and territory. Hence, the Polish Tatra Sheepdog will bark to warn his owners of suspicious sounds and possible intruders. He is very wary of strangers, often showing antagonism and aggression. This breed is not recommended for dog breeders with insufficient experience.

Coat / Care:

The Polish Tatra Sheepdog has a massive, double coat. While the outer layer is hard, straight or slightly wavy, the undercoat is thick and dense. Usually, the representatives of this breed have a pure white color. This dog needs a daily brushing to remove excess hair. Particular attention should be paid during the shedding season. The Polish Tatra Sheepdog should be bathed only when necessary. Dog’s ears and teeth should be cleaned weekly though.

Health Problems:

The Polish Tatra Sheepdog is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to hip dysplasia, juvenile cataracts, volvulus, epilepsy, allergic dermatitis and patellar luxation. The Polish Tatra Sheepdog has a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years.

Weight / Height

The male Polish Tatra Sheepdog dog breed’s height is around 26 – 28 inches and weighs around 90 and 130 pounds. Female dogs can reach a size from 24 – 26 inches and weighs between 80 and 130 pounds. Male dogs are generally larger than females.

Training:

This breed requires socialization at very young age. Basic rules of obedience are also extremely important for proper development of Polish Tatra Sheepdogs. The coach must be a leader, dominant and strict. But, respect and fairness are essential, as the Polish Tatra Sheepdog will not respond to rudeness.

Activity:

The Polish Tatra Sheepdog is harder, and he needs a job to do. He loves playing with the family, as a matter of fact, he enjoys all kind of family activities. Polish Tatra Sheepdogs thrive best in a spacious yard, where they can wander, play and explore. Thus, this breed is not suitable for a city apartment, nor for a small country house.
