The Puggle is a hybrid breed, created by crossing two dog breeds Pug and Beagle. Hence, this is a designer dog. Puggles are very popular companion dogs.
Height: 10-15 inches Weight: 10-30 pounds Lifespan: 10-15 years
This breed’s outer appearance can be extremely diverse. Actually, it is very difficult to find two completely identical Puggles. The Puggle has an athletic, long body and slightly elongated muzzle (like the Beagle); and large, round eyes and curly tail (like the Pug).
The Puggle is affectionate, active, cheerful and well-balanced. He loves to be in the spotlight and therefore needs constant communication with people. Hence, if left alone and neglected for long, the Puggle becomes unmanageable and can even develop separation anxiety syndrome. This breed gets along well with dogs, other pets and children, and it truly enjoys playing with all of them. Even though this breed is friendly to strangers, it will bark to warn the family about their presence.
Puggles have a short, thick, rough coat. Periodically, the Puggle should be cleaned and brushed with a stiff brush. Also, the dog’s ears and eyes should be cleaned regularly, but bathing is allowed only when absolutely necessary.
This breed has a tendency to skin and eye diseases (cherry eye), breathing problems, patellar luxation, hip dysplasia and epilepsy. Also, Puggles are very sensitive to extremely high temperatures.
The Puggle is very stubborn and therefore difficult to train, especially when it comes to cleanliness. This breed needs early socialization and obedience training. Training must be consistent and based on positive reinforcement techniques such as food rewards, praise and play. Furthermore, the coach has to be strict but fair, as Puggles will not respond to too harsh methods of training.
Puggles require day-to-day exercise and mental stimulation. The Puggle can bear living in a city apartment, but he needs plenty of toys to keep him occupied. In addition, regular workouts outside are very important for this breed’s well-being.
