If a bee stings your dog, the most important thing is that you stay calm and collected. An insect sting is quite painful, so it is necessary to immediately administer a painkiller. Also, you can use ice and apply it to the wound. This will reduce swelling and ease the pain.
If your dog gets stung by a bee, you will notice a swollen area around the sting. Since dogs tend to investigate insects too closely, they usually get stung on their faces. Hence, the nose, legs and the muzzle are the most vulnerable parts. However, the worst case scenario is a sting on the tongue or inside the mouth, because swelling can close the dog’s throat and block his airway.
Check your dog immediately to see if a venomous stinger is still present. It is crucial to remove the stinger as soon as possible since it can continue to release the venom up to three minutes after the bite.
Hence, try to remove a stinger by scraping it with a fingernail or place a cardboard horizontally on the swollen area and move it aside. Afterwards, apply a cold compress. This will control the pain, itching and further swelling.
If the swelling does not fall down after few days, make sure to notify your veterinarian. He will prescribe a drug (antihistamine), depending on the size of the swelling and weight of your dog.
Multiple stings are very dangerous and can cause a severe allergic reaction. Hence, if not properly taken care of, the dog can go into anaphylactic shock and die.
Hence, if you notice any of these symptoms, you should take your dog to the veterinarian hospital.
Dogs are rather curious animals. So, if you have a garden, make sure it is well-fenced. Also, it is very important that you prevent your dog from exploring that specific area.
When you go for a walk with your dog, it is recommended to keep it leashed. This will prevent the dog from exploring places that can be dangerous.
Ultimately, if you choose to travel with your pet, consult your veterinarian before departure. He will prescribe an antihistamine with the indicated dose. Antihistamine medications will stop allergy symptoms. At the end of the day, it is best to be prepared.
